Young girl arrested after throwing acid at her ex-boyfriend by disguising herself as a male. The incident grabbed headlines across the country as the girl was caught by the Police officials. On April 19, a groom named Damrudhar Baghel was getting married to a 19-year-old woman in Chhote Amabal village under the Bhanpuri police station limits in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district. However, during the wedding ceremony, an acid attack occurred, injuring the groom, bride, and 10 attendees. The police filed a case against the 19 year old girl under section 326 A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid, etc.) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and launched an investigation. The 22 year old accused confessed to the crime she committed during the investigation conducted by the Police officials, says the reports of various media portals.

The police officials scanned CCTV footage, activated informers, and checked the backgrounds of the bride and groom to identify the attacker. However, since the incident happened in the late evening hours and power supply was disrupted at that time, the attacker’s identity remained unknown. Eventually, the police found out that a woman who was an ex-lover of the groom was involved in the attack, following which she was taken into custody.
According to Bastar Additional Superintendent of Police Nivedita Pal, the accused claimed that she and Damrudhar Baghel had been in a relationship for several years, and he cheated on her by marrying another woman. Upon finding out about his marriage, she planned the attack and stole acid from a chilli farm where she worked. The acid was typically used to clean the drip system in the farm. The investigation further revealed that the accused woman disguised herself as a man to conceal her identity while committing the crime.

This incident is not the only one of its kind in recent times. Earlier this month, the police arrested the ex-lover of a newly-married woman for allegedly planting a bomb inside a home theatre music system he gifted to the couple in Kabirdham district. The explosion in the equipment killed the woman’s husband and his elder brother.
These incidents shed light on the dangers of obsession and unrequited love. When people become too attached to another person, they can become possessive and controlling. If that person leaves or rejects them, they may lash out in violent ways, as seen in the incidents in Chhattisgarh. It is essential to address these issues through therapy or other means to prevent such tragedies.

Furthermore, the use of acid as a weapon highlights the need for stricter regulations on its sale and distribution. In recent years, there has been a rise in acid attacks in India, often used as a form of revenge or punishment. The government has made some efforts to address the issue, including introducing stricter penalties for offenders and regulating the sale of acid. However, more needs to be done to prevent such attacks and provide support to the victims.
