YMCA issue – George Abraham, the principal of YMCA College of Physical Education, Nandanam, has been arrested by the Chennai city police on charges of allegedly harassing a first-year student who is under the age of 18. Abraham was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The Saidapet All Women Police Station (AWPS) had booked him three months ago after he allegedly sent obscene messages to a 22-year-old post-graduate student in the college. In that case, he had evaded arrest and surrendered before a magistrate. He was also booked under the Woman Harassment Act and the IT Act.

However, Abraham was subsequently granted bail and returned to work, after which students in the college staged a sit-in protest seeking action against him. According to police sources, Abraham had allegedly harassed the post-graduate student under the guise of providing personal guidance. He had obtained her phone number and kept sending vulgar messages.

In another complaint against the principal, a 17-year-old girl disclosed harassment. The Saidapet AWPS booked a case against him and arrested him. According to a senior police officer privy to the investigations, Abraham had allegedly touched the minor girl inappropriately during a gym session. When she confronted him, he had also threatened her. Police seized the cctv footage for reference.

This incident is a clear violation of the dignity and safety of women and minors. It is a crime that should not be taken lightly. The authorities should take swift and decisive action to ensure that justice is served and that such incidents do not happen in the future.
