Previously, ‘legacy’ blue ticks were given to verified accounts belonging to people of public interest, such as celebrities, politicians, and journalists.

Under the new system, only those subscribed to Twitter Blue can keep a blue tick, while businesses must pay for a gold tick. The decision is part of Musk’s efforts to rid the platform of the so-called ‘lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark.’ The change is hoped to make Twitter a ‘digital town square’ that promotes free speech and trust.

Many popular celebrities account has been affected , since the removal of the checkmark. Users have expressed their disappointment about the decision, with one user stating that the value of the checkmark lies not with the holder but with the people trying to determine whether to trust the source.

Twitter’s new verification system includes blue ticks, gold ticks, and grey ticks. Blue ticks are available through Twitter Blue, a subscription service that gives users a ‘Blue Tick’ of verification for a monthly fee. The cost for the service is currently £9.60 per month for those who purchase it through the web and £11 per month through Apple iOS. Companies that want to keep their ‘official’ Twitter checkmark will be given no option but to pay £11,400 per year plus an extra £50/month to have affiliated business accounts. Grey ticks are used to verify government accounts and associated bodies, and governments do not have to pay a cost for these ticks.
