The government of India has taken steps to address the issue of forced marriages. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, prohibits marriage of girls below the age of 18 and boys below the age of 21. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, provides legal protection to women against domestic violence and abuse. The Indian Penal Code also criminalizes the act of forcibly marrying someone.

However, despite these laws, forced marriages continue to occur, especially in rural areas where traditional practices hold sway. The lack of awareness and education on the issue, along with the reluctance of victims to speak out, makes it challenging to tackle the problem.

The incident in Hamirpur highlights the distressing reality of forced marriages and the impact they have on individuals. It is essential to create awareness about the issue and provide support to those who are affected by it. The government and civil society must work together to create a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can make choices for themselves, without fear of retribution or violence.
