Virat Kohli is an Indian cricketer and former captain of the Indian national cricket team. On Monday, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won a thrilling encounter against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The match, which was played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, saw RCB defending a modest total of 126 runs against LSG. The pitch was slow, and the RCB batsmen struggled to score runs. However, their bowlers put up a clinical performance to restrict LSG to 108 runs and win the match.

RCB’s official social media handles posted a video where the Bangalore side can be seen celebrating the win in their dressing room. The victory was special for RCB skipper Virat Kohli, who was involved in a heated exchange with LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir after the match. Kohli termed the win as ‘sweet and special’ and highlighted the fact that they got more support from the home crowd. He said, “It’s an unbelievable feeling. It tells you all about how much they like us as a team and how people come out and back us.”

Kohli also praised his team’s character for defending the low total. He said, “It’s a very sweet win. Feels special for many reasons, most importantly for the kind of character we showed defending that total. Everyone had the belief we can do that.” Meanwhile, RCB opener Faf du Plessis, who top-scored with 44, praised Kohli’s on-field aggression and said, “That’s the best version of Virat. He’s pumped up.”

Du Plessis and Kohli combined for a 62-run opening stand and set the foundation for RCB’s total. The plan was to take on the seamers because it was hard work against the spinners on a tricky wicket. RCB had to adapt to the conditions, and Du Plessis played a vital role in taking the innings deep.

RCB’s bowlers, including fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, who took 2-15, made an early impact in his first game of the season, and the spinners took over. Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga had Deepak Hooda stumped, and Karan Sharma got rid of the dangerous Nicholas Pooran for 9 as LSG slumped to 5-38 in seven overs. Karan Sharma said, “It’s a good feeling as this was the ground where I got my first 10-Wicket haul during Duleep Trophy. Despite a small total, we defended it, so I am very proud of the team and myself.”

After the match ended, Kohli and Gambhir shook hands, and everything seemed fine. However, things heated up when LSG opening batter Kyle Mayers walked up to Kohli and seemed to have said something. Gambhir came and took Mayers away, but tempers started to flare up. Visuals from the match showed Gambhir and Kohli involved in an animated discussion. A few other players and LSG skipper KL Rahul separated the two. Rahul and Kohli also had a chat later on.

In its release, the IPL said that Gambhir had been fined 100 per cent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the match. Gambhir admitted to the Level 2 offense under Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct. Similarly, Kohli was fined 100 per cent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the match.
