Vasanthi, A Female Inspector Got Dismissed from her role. “The police department is your friend.” is a phrase that you might have heard many times. But here is a question, is this statement true? Are police really your friend? The incident of inspector Vasanthi at the Pudukottai district creates disbelief in the behaviour of the police. Former police inspector Vasanthi, who was booked in an extortion case in 2021, has been dismissed from service by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Madurai Range, R Ponni. The dismissal order was served to Vasanthi, who is currently lodged at the Madurai Central Prison, under Article 311 of the Constitution.

Vasanthi was arrested and remanded in judicial custody on March 31, 2021, in a case registered for attempting to tamper with the witnesses in the extortion case. According to the prosecution, the complainant, Asrath of Sivaganga district, had borrowed Rs10 lakh. On July 5, 2021, Vasanthi snatched the money bag from Asrath and asked him to collect the same from the police station the next day. However, when Asrath went to the station the following day, Vasanthi told him that there was no money in the bag and that it only contained newspapers. Based on his complaint, the Madurai district crime branch police registered a case against five people, including Vasanthi. A team of police later arrested her at Kothagiri in the Nilgiris district.

In October 2021, the Madras High Court granted bail to Vasanthi on certain conditions. However, in July 2022, the HC dismissed the plea moved by Vasanthi seeking to keep the disciplinary proceedings in abeyance until the disposal of the criminal proceedings.

The police had filed a miscellaneous petition seeking to cancel the bail granted to Vasanthi, stating that she attempted to tamper with the complainant and witnesses in the case. By order dated February 24, 2023, the court refused to cancel her bail but directed the police to register a separate case if any attempt has been made by any of the accused to tamper with the witnesses in the case. The court also directed the south zone IG to take necessary steps under the witness protection scheme to provide protection to witnesses in the case and ensure a fair trial.

Vasanthi’s dismissal from service under Article 311 of the Constitution is a significant move and serves as a warning to law enforcement officials against indulging in corrupt practices. The article provides for the dismissal, removal or reduction in rank of government officials, including police officers, after a departmental inquiry. It is a powerful tool to maintain discipline and accountability among government officials and ensures that they perform their duties with integrity and honesty.
