A public feud between two senior women officers in the Karnataka administration has taken an ugly turn, with the Basavaraj Bommai government at a loss for an appropriate response. On Sunday, IPS officer D Roopa Moudgil shared private photos of IAS officer Rohini Sindhuri on social media, accusing her of violating service conduct rules by sending the photos to male IAS officers. Roopa claimed that Sindhuri had shared the photos with three IAS officers in 2021 and 2022.

In response to Roopa’s accusations, Sindhuri issued a statement on Sunday, stating that Roopa was driving a “false, personal vilification campaign” against her and threatened to take action. Sindhuri further alleged that Roopa had collected the photos from social media and screenshots of her WhatsApp status to defame her. She urged Roopa to reveal the names of the officials she claimed Sindhuri had sent the pictures to.

The feud continued to escalate, with Roopa publishing a long list of corruption accusations against Sindhuri on Saturday, claiming that she had also complained to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Chief Secretary Vandita Sharma. In response, Sindhuri referred to “mental illness” while hitting out at her adversary. She alleged that Roopa had been driving a false, personal vilification campaign against her, which was her standard modus operandi.

It also shocked many in the Karnataka administration, with State Home Minister Araga Jnanendra warning of action and expressing his fury at what he called the “bad behaviour” of the two officers. Jnanendra stated that he had discussed the issue with the police chief and that the Chief Minister was also aware.

“We are not sitting quiet, action will be taken against them. They both are behaving in such a bad way – not even normal people speak on the streets like this. Let them do whatever they want on their personal issues, but coming before the media and behaving the way they are is not right,” Jnanendra said.

As a result of the feud, both officers have been transferred without new postings. Senior IAS officer Munish Moudgil, who is Roopa’s husband, has also been transferred in what appears to be collateral damage.
