Authored by TK Indrani, the textbook is for students as per the Indian Nursing Council syllabus. A page in the textbook lists the “Merits and advantages of Dowry” . “There are certain merits and advantages of dowry system” starts the portion which talks about the positives in dowry.
“Dowry is helpful in establishing new household. The custom of giving household items like cots, mattresses, television, fan, refrigerator, utensils, clothes and even vehicle are found in many parts of our India as dowry” reads the first point under the above mentioned sub-heading.
“The parental share of property. The girl receives a share of the parental property as dowry. Spread of education among girls. Because of burden of dowry, many parents have started educating their girls” reads the further points. “When the girls are educated or even employed, the demand of dowry will be less. Thus it is an indirect advantage” further days the author through the text book.
To everyone’s shock, the topic further continues to make a statement on “Ugly looking girls can be married off with attractive dowry with well or ugly looking boys”

I am really disgusted to read this. It’s 2022 and people are discussing the merits of dowry? In uneducated households in India, there are news of brides getting burned alive by in-laws. Dowry system is due to the culmination of illiteracy, immorality and evilness. https://t.co/mE3aWpPF4A

The matter escalated after Priyanka Chathruvedi, Shiv sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP tagged minister of education Dharmendra Pradhan and requested him to remove such books from circulation.
“I request Shri @dpradhanbjp ji to remove such books from circulation. That a textbook elaborating the merits of dowry can actually exist in our curriculum is a shame for the nation and its constitution” her tweet read.
