Dance Choreographer cum actor Prabhu Deva’s Pongal release “Theal” landed in huge trouble due the makers have unofficially remade Korean film “Pieta” directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kim Ki Duk. According to News 18, producer of “Theal” was forced to give a huge amount as compensation to a production house that belongs to Bollywood film industry as the film making company has bought the remake rights of “Pieta” legally.

Directed by Hari kumar who is known for playing lead roles in a number of Tamil films, “Theal” starred Prabhu Deva and Samyuktha Hegde in the lead roles. Produced by K.E Gnanavel Raja of Studio greens, the film was released in theatres marking the auspicious Pongal festival on 14th of January 2022. Eashwari Rao, Yogi Babu and others played supporting roles.

The film’s plot revolves around a man who works for a loan shark as a debt collector. A woman walks into his life, claiming to be his mother and the rest of the movie lies on how the protagonist handles her presence in his life. Hari kumar who predominantly worked as a dance choreographer, ventured into filmmaking for the first time in his career.

The report of News 18 says that the producer came to know about the unofficial remake only after the film’s production got completed. “Pieta” is a globally acclaimed film directed by famous Korean filmmaker Kim Ki Duk. A Bollywood film production house has officially bought the remake rights of “Pieta” and were planning to make the film.

On knowing “Theal” being heavily inspired from the Korean film, remake rights of which was bought by them, the Bollywood production house reportedly asked Rs. 10 crore from “Theal” makers as compensation. After attempting to re-edit the film without the touch of “Pieta”, makers of “Theal” ended up giving compensation amount of. Rs. 1 core above to the Bollywood production house.

An inside report has said that Prabhu Deva returned a huge amount from is salary after knowing about the loss of “Theal” producer, according the News 18. It is notable that the film didn’t do well in the box office amidst the surging COVID 19 cases and has made the producer to pay a huge amount to the Bollywood production house as compensation.

On the work front, Prabhu Deva is expected appear in films such as “Bhageera” and “Yung Mung Chung”. His last film “Pon Manickavel”, a cop drama got released on Disney Plus Hotstar.
