When Democratic Party presidential nominee Joe Biden picked Kamala Harris to be his running mate, it sparked the frenzy on the other side of the globe to track down her connections to Chennai, the Tamil nadu’s capital where her Mother was morn.

Joe Biden, an American politician who served as the 47th vice president of the United States from 2009 to 2017, has announced Black Indian-American Kamala Harris as his choice of running mate to take on Donald Trump in the 2020 US presidential election scheduled this November. Democratic Nominee Joe Biden made this announcement on Tuesday and Kamala Devi Harris will be the first Black woman and the first person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major party.

The 55 year old woman was born in Oakland, California to Donald. J. Harris and Shyamala Gopalan,a breast-cancer scientist who had emigrated from Chennai, India in 1960 to pursue a doctorate in endocrinology at UC Berkeley. Donald J. Harris, is a Stanford University emeritus professor of economics, who emigrated from British Jamaica in 1961 for graduate study in economics at UC Berkeley.

As soon as Kamala Harris achieved the immense feat, Chennai based social media users has been posting proud tweets alleging that she belongs to Besant Nagar of Chennai whereas the other set of people claiming that she doesn’t like herself to be identified as “Indian”. However, Kamala Harris brings a unique appeal to the Democratic ticket. Being an Indian origin politician, she identifies herself as an African-American, and has a Jewish husband which surely would attract large and important cross section of US voters.

Meanwhile, on seeing the debate on social media about her identity, actress Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli who gained widespread fame for acting in “Lakshmi” short film and “Richie” of Nivin Pauly, posted a sarcastic tweet saying that she and Kamala Harris were related in some way.

She asked people who belong to Tamil nadu not to claim her identity as she is identifying herself as simply “American”. She further stated that she knows this because Kamala’s thatha and her pwn great grandfather were distant cousins in a humorous way. “Come on guys… Kamala Harris is very clear about her identity and says she identifies herself as simply ‘American’. Can we not claim her identity pls.. you ask me how I know this? that’s only because her thatha and my great grandfather were distant cousi……..” read Lakshmi’s tweet.

To one of a twitter user who said that his “thatha” was also a relative of Kamala Harris, Lakshmi replied by saying “Hahaha! Yaaaas. We are all one big happy family!”
