In a significant breakthrough, the Bengaluru police have successfully apprehended a couple hailing from Tamil Nadu in connection with the recent case of the infamous ‘tomato robbery’ that took place near the city. The incident, which occurred on the night of July 8 in Chikkajala, involved the theft of tomatoes worth a staggering Rs 2.5 lakh from a pick-up truck transporting produce from Hiriyur in Chitradurga to Kolar. The arrested individuals have been identified as M Bhaskaran, aged 38, and Sindhuja, aged 35, residents of Vaniyambadi in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the authorities are continuing their pursuit of three other suspects, Rakesh, Mahesh, and Kumar, who allegedly aided the couple in executing the tomato heist.
The incident initially came to light when the truck’s driver, Mallesh, promptly reported the robbery to the RMC Yard police. He stated that unidentified individuals commandeered his vehicle, a pick-up truck laden with 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes, after a minor collision near the Goraguntepalya junction. The assailants demanded immediate compensation of Rs 50,000 from Mallesh, and when he was unable to comply, they forcibly drove away with the truck.

At first, the police perceived the incident as a potential case of road rage and swiftly launched a manhunt for the suspects and their vehicle, leveraging CCTV footage as a crucial tool in their investigation. As they delved deeper into the case, however, a more sinister plot began to emerge. The stolen vehicle was traced to Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu, indicating that this was not a mere act of impulsive aggression.
The perpetrators attempted to conceal their tracks by altering the number plate of their Mahindra Xylo getaway car, but they carelessly left the number plate of the stolen pick-up truck unchanged. The empty truck was eventually discovered after news of the theft had spread, abandoned near Devanahalli. Undeterred, the police persisted in their investigation, meticulously scrutinizing over 200 CCTV recordings and gathering valuable information from local residents in different parts of Tamil Nadu. Their tenacity paid off as they managed to identify the couple allegedly responsible for the robbery. Subsequently, a joint operation led to the arrest of the male and female culprits at their residence in Vaniyambadi late on a Friday night.
While this development represents a significant step towards resolving the ‘tomato robbery’ case, the authorities are actively pursuing the remaining three suspects. The investigations are ongoing to ascertain their involvement and bring them to justice.

The ‘tomato robbery’ incident has not only raised eyebrows but has also highlighted the vulnerability of the transportation and agriculture sectors to such criminal activities. The theft of essential commodities not only impacts the livelihoods of the individuals involved in their cultivation and transportation but also contributes to price fluctuations in the market. As the police continue their efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects, they are also looking into the possibility of a larger network behind such robberies. It is crucial to dismantle such criminal networks to safeguard the interests of farmers, traders, and consumers.
This incident has also prompted discussions on implementing better security measures in the transportation of agricultural goods. Strengthening security protocols, ensuring regular monitoring of goods in transit, and employing advanced technology like GPS tracking systems can significantly mitigate such thefts in the future. Additionally, public awareness campaigns can play a vital role in curbing such criminal activities. Creating awareness among farmers, transporters, and the public about reporting suspicious activities and vehicles can lead to more prompt responses from law enforcement agencies.
