With the entire country celebrating the achievements of the female athletes in the Tokyo Olympics that got completed recently, a bizarre decision of dropping Sameeha Barwin, a female athlete with excellent track record from participating at the 4th World Deaf Athletics Championships that are going to be held between August 23 and 28 in Poland was took by The Sports Authority of India (SAI). The reason stated by the board caused various kind of reactions in social media platforms with public slamming the authorities of (SAI). They allegedly said that they are not willing to send a woman alone with five male athletes to Poland for the competition.

Sameera has been participating in 100 metre race and long jump since she was 12 years of age. She who has 90 % hearing impairment, has won three gold medals at three national athletic championships for deaf athletes held in the years 2017, 2018 and 2019 in Jharkhand, Calicut and Chennai respectively. While interacting with media, Sameera’s mother who initially wanted her daughter to leave pursuing sports, said that her daughter is an excellent athlete. She believed that the federation had dropped her daughter for such silly reasons and said that she is now fighting for her daughter’s dignity now, more than anything.

In the national selection trials for the World Deaf Athletics Championships that was conducted by All India Sports Council, Sameera was the only female athlete to cut for the championships and was dropped by SAI later. Semmera’s mother said that they (SAI) informed her about Sameera’s rejection citing her being the only female among five female athletes. “I was told that they cannot send my daughter alone as she is only a female athlete and also arrangements cannot be made for an escort due to shortage of funds.” she said according The News Minute.

Despite of the several attempts made by the family, Sameera’s name was not included in the squad that is visiting Poland. Even Vijayakumar, MP of Kanyakumari district wrote a letter to the Union Sports minister Anurag and there was no reponse. It has been reported that Vijayakumar mentioned that the financial arrangements for Sameera’s Poland visit will be made but the family didn’t receive any kind of positive response.

The issue has created huge outrage in social media platforms with people slamming SAI. “This is just tragic …. Dropping Sameera Barwin just because of her gender , especially at a time when we are celebrating #womenhockeyindia performance and hoping to see more women athletes winning medal is not at all acceptable ..” an online user wrote to condemn the sports federation.
