Sterlite Gypsum Evacuations to be used for cement manufacturing, says the recent reports. In a commendable move towards environmental responsibility, the closed Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi has taken significant strides to evacuate the accumulated gypsum from its premises. The initiative, set to begin on June 23, showcases the plant’s commitment to complying with the Supreme Court’s directive and the Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to address waste management effectively.
Under the guidance of Gaurav Kumar, the Thoothukudi sub-collector and head of the expert committee overseeing the gypsum evacuation process, a comprehensive assessment was conducted to determine the volume of waste materials present within the plant premises. The report submitted to the Thoothukudi Collector revealed approximately 1.25 lakh tonnes of gypsum requiring removal.
Ensuring meticulous preparation, the team also inspected the entry and exit points of the plant, ensuring the installation of CCTV cameras for enhanced security measures. This attention to detail emphasizes the plant’s dedication to a systematic and efficient waste removal procedure.
Gaurav Kumar, expressing optimism and a forward-thinking approach, announced that the evacuated gypsum from the Sterlite premises would be sold to cement manufacturing units. This sustainable solution not only facilitates the disposal of waste but also contributes to the recycling and reutilization of gypsum, benefiting the construction industry.
In a remarkable display of corporate responsibility, Sterlite Copper has taken upon itself the financial burden of the entire evacuation process. By assuming these costs, the company demonstrates its commitment to resolving the waste issue while shouldering the associated expenses.
This positive step by Sterlite Copper signifies a renewed focus on environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. The cooperative efforts between the plant management, the expert committee, and the government highlight the importance of collaboration in addressing critical environmental concerns.
The evacuation of gypsum from the Sterlite copper plant not only marks a crucial milestone in waste management but also signifies the plant’s dedication to community welfare and environmental sustainability. By adhering to legal mandates and working in harmony with governing bodies, Sterlite Copper sets an inspiring example for other industries to follow.
As the evacuation process commences on June 23, we can look forward to witnessing the successful removal of gypsum and the positive impact this endeavour will have on the environment, as well as the continued progress in achieving responsible waste management practices at Sterlite Copper.
In response to the public outcry regarding pollution concerns, the Tamil Nadu government took action on May 28, 2018, by instructing the state pollution control board to permanently seal and shut down the mining company’s plant. The closure decision was made following violent protests that erupted due to the pollution issue. The matter will now be brought before the apex court for further proceedings and a final resolution in late August.
The Supreme Court has announced that the case will be scheduled for a hearing and final resolution on August 22, 23 and we have to wait till the verdict to see whether Sterlite will resume functioning as it also provides benefits to the construction industry.
