Despite its popularity as a shopping hub, the mall has been mired in controversy due to violations that are negatively impacting both residents and the local ecosystem.

One of the most pressing issues plaguing the Saravana Selvarathnam complex is the emission of smoke and sewage from its premises. Shockingly, the complex lacks a permanent power connection and a functional sewage treatment plant, leading to a host of problems. The presence of four 1500-kilovolt amperes (KVA) diesel generators has caused significant distress for the neighboring residential areas, including Ganapathipuram, Surya Nagar, and Natesan Nagar. These generators emit black smoke and incessant noise, creating a dire situation for the residents who have been grappling with air and noise pollution for nearly eight months. The repercussions of this pollution are severe, as sleep disturbances and respiratory illnesses have become distressingly common among the affected population. Even students, who should be focusing on their studies, find it challenging to concentrate due to the relentless noise.

In response to the escalating situation, residents took matters into their own hands and protested outside the mall on August 5. Their demand was clear: the removal of the generators causing such widespread havoc. L Arivalagan, the complex’s maintenance manager, offered a written assurance that the generators would be relocated from their current position facing residential areas to a more suitable location on the premises by August 16. However, this assurance has been met with skepticism, and residents are prepared to renew their protest if the generators are not moved by the designated date.

Adding to the list of violations, an inspection by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on August 7 uncovered the unsettling fact that the complex’s permit to use generators had expired on March 31. This revelation underscores a troubling lack of adherence to regulatory standards. Furthermore, the sewage treatment plant on the premises has been found defunct, resulting in raw sewage being channeled into a closed trench that leads to the state highways department’s stormwater drain. Such a disregard for environmental regulations raises questions about the complex’s commitment to its responsibilities as a corporate entity.

Amidst these concerns, the situation surrounding the Saravana Selvarathnam complex has garnered the attention of local authorities. A senior Tangedco official revealed that the complex’s owners had not applied for a permanent electricity connection, despite claims to the contrary. Meanwhile, a TNPCB official who participated in the inspection affirmed that appropriate action would be taken in response to the violations. Tambaram Corporation commissioner R Alagumeena emphasized that the civic body is taking the matter seriously and intends to conduct inspections with the involvement of engineers and health inspectors.
