Yesterday marked the third anniversary of demonetisation when Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise announcement to invalidate old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The decision had wiped out 86 per cent of the total currency from circulation.

Three years down the line, India’s economy has seen a lot of turbulence with GDP growth going down to six-year-low, fiscal deficit growing significantly, and various sectors, including auto and manufacturing, facing crises.

“Let us ignore the temporary hardship, let us join this festival of integrity and credibility, let us enable coming generations to live their lives with dignity, let us fight corruption and black money,” said Modi in his iconic demonetisation speech.

Now, in the third year anniversary, S.VE Shekar, a BJP supporter said that the move of demonetisation is very much successful. To this tweet, actress and social activist Kasthuri confronted him by saying that there is no truth in it at all. The actress said that corruption has doubled since the announcement of demonetisation. Further she added that there were people who became wealthy within a months period and said that bribery and tax evasion doubled as they got 2000 rupees note instead of 1000.

During the announcement, without being able to spend the money they earned for some emergencies, many tragedies took place across the country. Some even took the extreme step of committing suicide after failing to exchange old notes while a few died standing in serpentine queues outside banks and ATMs to exchange their old currency.
