Santos decided to exclude Ronaldo from his starting line-up for the second time in a row. The strategy worked against Switzerland in the round of 16 with Goncalo Ramos scoring a hat-trick. Against the Atlas lions, the Benfica starlet led the attack and he couldn’t make much impact.
Ronaldo was eventually introduced in the 51st minute of the game. He had one effort in goal, which was well saved by Yassine Banou. Moracco clung on their lead, ensuring Portugal’s elimination from the tournament. Ronaldo left the field with teary eyes. It is believed that this was the last time Ronaldo appears in a Fifa world Cup stage.
From playin’ with absolute nobodies for over a decade to putting Portugal on the map and made them compete with the big boys and this is how he gets repaid…😊💔 #Ronaldo𓃵 #GOAT𓃵 pic.twitter.com/ofio5Fqycu

Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo’s partner came up with a strong message in her official Instagram handle, reacting to the loss of her boyfriend’s team.
“Today, your friend and coach made the wrong decision. That friend for whom you have so many words of admiration and respect. The same one who, when putting you on the field, saw how everything changed, but it was too late” read the Instagram story of Georgina.

“You can’t underestimate the best player of the world, it’s most powerful weapon. Much less should one stand up for those who don’t deserve it. Life gives us lessons. Today we don’t lose, we learn. We admire you” she ended her post.
Here’s her story :
However, Fernando Santos said that he has no regrets in benching Ronaldo as the same strategy worked very well against Switzerland. “I don’t think so, no regrets. I think this was a team that played very well against Switzerland. Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player. He came in when we thought it was necessary, so no regrets” he said to the media.
