“Remove Your Hijab” – Youths Arrested After Harassing Couple

“Remove your hijab” said a group of youths on seeing women wearing hijab while spending time with their loved ones at Vellore fort, Tamilnadu. On March 27, a group of individuals forced a woman to remove her hijab (headscarf) inside the 16th century Vellore Fort Complex in India. The incident was filmed by one of the perpetrators and uploaded to social media, where it quickly went viral. The video sparked outrage among the public, prompting the police to take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
After an initial inquiry, the North Police in Vellore arrested seven individuals, including a 17-year-old juvenile, for their involvement in the incident. The arrested individuals are S. Imran Pasha, 23, K. Santhosh, 22, Ibrahim Basha, 24, C. Prasanth, 20, Ashraf Basha, 20, and Mohammed Faizal, 22. Most of them are autorickshaw drivers in the area. The juvenile has been sent to a government home, while the other suspects remain in police custody.

Mobile phones belonging to the arrested individuals were also seized by the police and sent to the cybercrime wing for analysis. Superintendent of Police, Vellore, S. Rajesh Kannan, stated that cases have been registered against the suspects for intentional insults, wanton vilification, and acting against individual freedom.
The incident occurred around noon on March 27, when a woman and her friend visited the fort complex for sight-seeing. A group of individuals allegedly stopped them and demanded that the woman remove her hijab. The incident was filmed by one of the members of the group, and the video was uploaded to social media, where it quickly went viral. The North Police filed a case based on a complaint from the Village Administrative Officer for North Vellore town on March 29. Subsequently, five special police teams were formed to track down the suspects.

The suspects were arrested on charges of endangering public safety, threatening personal freedom, intending to create enmity between two sections of people, and acting against the modesty of women. The police have warned the public against sharing the video clip of the incident on social media platforms and other forums. Those who circulate the video clip may face charges of cyberbullying under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The police have also increased surveillance inside the fort complex following the incident. Further investigations are ongoing to determine whether any other individuals were involved in the incident.
