Rajasthan Tragedy Strikes as Truck Collides with Bus, Leaving 12 Dead and Many Injured

In a tragic incident that unfolded on the Jaipur-Agra national highway-21 near Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, at least 12 lives were lost, and 15 people were left injured when a speeding truck collided with a private bus from Gujarat. The accident occurred early in the morning while the bus was on its way to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, carrying 57 passengers. The aftermath of this heart-wrenching incident has seen condolences pouring in from the highest echelons of political leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. The incident transpired at around 5 am when the bus, en route from Gujarat to Mathura, was forced to make an unexpected halt near Hantara village. The reason for this unscheduled stop was a damaged diesel pipe, which prompted the bus driver to investigate the issue. Several passengers disembarked from the bus to observe the situation alongside the driver.

Tragedy struck when a speeding truck, approaching from the Jaipur side, rammed into the stationary bus from behind with immense force. The collision resulted in immediate casualties, with 12 individuals, including five men and seven women, losing their lives on the spot. Fifteen others suffered injuries and were quickly transported to the Raj Bahadur Memorial Hospital in Bharatpur for medical attention. Miraculously, the passengers who had exited the bus with the driver remained unharmed.

Preliminary findings from the police investigation suggest that the truck driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle, leading to this catastrophic accident. Following the collision, the truck driver, who initially fled the scene, was later apprehended approximately 35 kilometers away from the accident spot. Authorities have seized the truck involved in the incident and registered a complaint against the driver at the Lakhanpur police station. Legal action has been initiated under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The identity of the accused has not been disclosed, as the investigation is still ongoing.

In the wake of this heart-wrenching tragedy, leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed their condolences and support for the victims’ families. President Droupadi Murmu took to social media to share her sorrow, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the news of a bus full of devotees going from Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh, meeting with an accident in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan and the death of many passengers. I express my condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, deeply moved by the loss of lives, approved an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh to be given to the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 to those injured. The Prime Minister’s Office conveyed this information on their official social media platform. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also expressed his grief and confirmed that both the police and administrative teams were on the accident site, tending to the injured.

In a heartfelt post in Hindi on social media, Gehlot said, “The death of 12 devotees, who had come on a religious pilgrimage from Gujarat in Bharatpur, during the collision between a bus and a trailer is extremely sad. Police-administration is on the spot, and the injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment. I pray to God to give peace to the souls of all the deceased and courage to the families. May God give speedy recovery to all the injured.”
