Pregnant Before Marriage ??. In a shocking incident, women from economically weaker sections in Madhya Pradesh were subjected to pregnancy tests during a mass wedding ceremony held under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana in Gadsarai area of Dindori. The event has sparked massive uproar as well as a political slugfest with the Opposition questioning the move.

According to media reports, out of 219 girls, the tests for five came positive and they did not get married on Saturday. The Congress has raised several questions and asked who ordered the tests. State Congress chief Kamal Nath demanded a high-level probe into this incident and cited media reports to claim that more than 200 women were made to take pregnancy tests at the event.

Calling such testing an insult to the poor, Congress legislator Omkar Singh Markam said the state government must clarify what are the guidelines or rules for such pregnancy tests. The party demanded an inquiry into the incident which it termed as an “insult” to the poor.

This incident has not only raised questions on the government’s mass wedding scheme but also on the treatment of women from economically weaker sections. It has brought to light the patriarchal mindset that still exists in many parts of India where women’s bodies are subjected to scrutiny and control.

The Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana is a scheme launched by the Madhya Pradesh government in April 2006 to provide financial assistance to eligible couples. Under this scheme, the government provides Rs 56,000 as financial assistance to help economically weaker sections to get married.

The scheme is meant to help families who are unable to bear the expenses of marriage and to promote gender equality by encouraging the marriage of girls from economically weaker sections. However, the incident of pregnancy tests being conducted on some would-be brides has brought into question the intentions and implementation of the scheme.

The Congress party’s demand for an inquiry into the incident is justified as it is important to understand why such tests were conducted and who authorized them. It is also crucial to investigate whether any medical professionals were involved in the decision to conduct the tests and if they followed proper medical protocols.
The incident highlights the lack of awareness and sensitivity towards women’s reproductive health and rights in India. Women’s bodies are still subjected to scrutiny and control, and they are often denied agency over their own bodies.

The practice of subjecting women to pregnancy tests without their consent is not only a violation of their dignity but also a violation of their right to privacy. It is important for the government to ensure that such incidents do not happen again and to take steps to promote women’s reproductive health and rights.
The incident has also brought to light the need for greater gender sensitization and awareness among medical professionals. Medical professionals must be trained to understand the importance of informed consent and to respect women’s agency over their own bodies.

The incident in Madhya Pradesh is not an isolated one. Similar incidents have been reported in other parts of India, where women’s bodies are subjected to control and scrutiny in the name of tradition and culture.
It is time for the government to take concrete steps to address these issues and to promote gender equality and women’s rights. The government must ensure that women are treated with dignity and respect and that their reproductive health and rights are protected.
