On the night of the incident, Pratiksha was playing with friends in front of her grandmother’s house when her parents arrived. They scolded her for staying out late and playing, reminding her of the importance of studying. After giving her the house keys, the parents left to purchase household essentials. When they returned an hour later, they found the house latched from inside, and Pratiksha did not respond to their calls to open the door. The police have registered a case and are currently investigating the circumstances leading up to Pratiksha’s suicide. While the community is still grappling with the shock and sadness of such a young life lost, one investigating officer has attributed the tragedy to social media. According to the police, unrestricted access to the internet can expose young minds to harmful influences, which can ultimately lead to devastating consequences.

Pratiksha’s death has raised important questions about the role of social media in the lives of young people. While the internet has revolutionized the way we connect and communicate, it has also brought with it a host of new challenges. With the rise of social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, young people are now more connected than ever before. However, this constant access to technology can come at a cost.

For young people, social media can provide a platform for self-expression and creativity. Many children and teenagers use social media to connect with friends, explore new interests, and showcase their talents. However, social media can also be a breeding ground for negativity and toxicity. Cyberbullying, hate speech, and harmful content can all be found online, and young people are often the most vulnerable to its effects.

The pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards, the fear of missing out on the latest trends, and the constant comparison to others can all contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. In the case of Pratiksha, it is unclear how much of a role social media played in her decision to take her own life. However, her death highlights the need for parents, educators, and policymakers to take a closer look at the impact of social media on young people’s mental health and well-being.

One way to address this issue is through education. By teaching children and teenagers about the potential risks and benefits of social media, we can help them develop the skills they need to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. This includes teaching them about the importance of online privacy, how to identify and report harmful content, and how to build healthy online relationships.

Another approach is to encourage parents and caregivers to monitor their children’s social media use. While it is important to respect children’s privacy and autonomy, parents can play an active role in helping their children make informed decisions about their online activity. This includes setting limits on screen time, monitoring their children’s social media accounts, and having open and honest conversations about the potential risks and benefits of social media.

Policymakers can play a role in regulating the use of social media, particularly when it comes to protecting young people from harmful content and online abuse. This can include measures such as age verification, stronger penalties for cyberbullying, and increased
