Ponniyin Selvan fame Actress Vinothini Vaidyanathan recently posted on Twitter about two well-known individuals who had stolen money from her house. The theft occurred twice, with the total amount of stolen money being Rs 25,000. Despite filing a police complaint against both the individuals, the actress expressed her lack of confidence in their promises to return the money within a week. The individuals in question were not below the poverty line, but were considered to be Annadankachis, which means they were known for providing food and assistance to the poor. One of the individuals was a house painter and the other was a mechanic. Both individuals stole out of necessity, with one being caught on CCTV and the other confessing due to a call to his ex-wife’s number.

Despite being workable individuals who normally work and live within their means, the current economic climate and social environment may have contributed to their decision to steal. The common people are being crushed by factors such as demonetization, GST, state taxes, inflation, petrol price hikes, electricity bill hikes, substandard goods, discrimination between rich and poor, high interest rates, and more. Even a poor family living in a metropolitan city like Chennai requires Rs 20,000-25,000 per month to survive.

She came up with a note I her profile “Last week 2 persons stole a total of Rs 25000 from me. (Two separate incidents). A police complaint has been filed against both of them and they have promised to return the money within this week. But I’m not sure. Although neither of them are below the poverty line, they are a kind of Annadankachis. One is a house painter. Another is a mechanic. They stole money for necessity. One confessed because there was CCTV footage. Another confessed because he called his wife’s number and blew it and he no longer lives with that wife”.

“Both are very workable. In fact, we have known that mechanic for years. The painter buys the project alone and works on contract with a corporate called Urban Company. Normally, such people think of working and eating. Such people who are in lower to middle class live with many aspirations for their family and children. They will work hard to raise their standard of living. Then what motivates them (i.e. those who are not familiar with the field) to steal? Today’s era and the social environment in which we live. Demonetisation, GST, state taxes, inflation, petrol hike, electricity hike, low quality of goods, increasing divide between rich and poor, high interest rates are crushing the common people”.

“Even a poor family needs Rs 20-25000 per month in a metro like Chennai. In this, more factors can be piled up such as overtime work, traffic, resulting physical and mental disorders, problems of salaries not arriving on time, the tendency to exploit the labor of delivery boys/executives who work as corporate vendors and pay them as if they are begging for commission. There is also a possibility that people will be beaten to death for hunger in the future. If that happens, the only good thing about it is that at that time, caste and religion will disappear and next time we will be divided into two groups, those who have food/water/air and those who don’t” she added.

In addition to these financial burdens, there are other factors that affect the common people such as overtime work, traffic, resulting physical and mental disorders, problems of salaries not arriving on time, delivery employees working as employees of corporates, the tendency to exploit the labor of sales representatives and pay them as if they are begging for commission, and more. All these factors create an environment where the common people are struggling to make ends meet, leading to desperation and potentially illegal activities.

Furthermore, there is a possibility that people will resort to violence and even murder in the future due to hunger. The economic inequality and lack of basic resources may push people to their limits, leading to violent and desperate actions. However, the only positive outcome of such a scenario is that it would eliminate the caste and religious divides, and instead create two groups of people – those who have access to basic resources like food, water, and air, and those who do not.
