Pondicherry, also known as Puducherry, is a Union Territory in southern India. The rise of social media has opened doors for people to connect with each other on a global level, but it has also given birth to new forms of cybercrime, including cyberstalking, online harassment, and identity theft. In Puducherry, a union territory in India, the cybercrime police recently arrested a 22-year-old man, Dhivagar, for impersonating a woman fitness coach on Instagram and duping women into sending him their nude photos for customized exercise tips.

The incident came to light when one of his victims, a woman who runs a store selling herbal skincare products, approached the cybercrime police to seek help in deleting her photos uploaded by the perpetrator in different social media platforms. The police managed to track down and arrest Dhivagar using his Instagram and other social media accounts. The police found several fake Instagram accounts created by the accused, through which he sent the nude photos of the women to their contacts and threatened to release them online unless they made nude video calls to him.

The police seized Dhivagar’s mobile phone, which contained nude photos and videos of more than ten women. The accused had prescribed “customized exercises” to the victims by visiting several online fitness websites, where he gathered information on specific exercises needed to tone their bodies into a good shape. The women initially did not suspect any foul play as the exercises helped them in toning their physical fitness. However, they started receiving messages blackmailing them to make nude video calls, which made them realize that they had been duped.

Inspector (cybercrime) B.C. Kirtty stated that so far, only one woman has lodged a complaint against the accused, but they would register fresh cases if they receive complaints from more women. The police warned people to be cautious while using social media and not share any private photos or documents with unknown people. SP (cybercrime) Vishnu Kumar advised the public not to trust the identity and genuineness of social media users and be wary of fraudsters who create fake accounts in social media platforms and gather photos and videos of other users to cheat women and men alike.

The incident highlights the need for people to be aware of the dangers of sharing sensitive information with unknown people on social media. It also highlights the importance of staying vigilant and reporting such incidents to the authorities promptly. The police must be commended for their swift action in apprehending the accused and their efforts to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
