A statement made by BJP’s Asvathaman about petrol price hike in a discussion that took place in Puthiya Thalaimurai news channel, caused hilarious trolls and jokes in social media platforms. With anchor Karthikeyan hosting the show, DMK’s Rajiv Gandhi, Congress’s Manickam Thyagi, Right wing activist Ramesh Sedhuraman, BJP’s took part in the discussion. A video clip of Asvathaman saying that petrol price hike affects only rich people is doing rounds in social media platforms with comments trolling him.

Petrol has crossed the Rs 100 mark in at least six states as a result of a Rs 4.9 per litre hike in its price since the beginning of May. Petrol costed Rs. 101.76 per litre in Mumbai and it was charged Rs. 96.94 in Chennai. Increasing central and state taxes on petrol and diesel are the key reason for the prices of petrol and diesel being at record highs, even though the price of crude oil is only 3.5 per cent higher than at the beginning of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic led to a sharp fall in the demand for crude oil.

Now, while addressing the issue in a discussion that took place in Puthiya Thalaimurai news channel, BJP’s Asvathaman said that the petrol price hike is bearable for an ordinary man. “If we say that petrol price has increased Rs. 20 in the past two, three years, one litre of petrol is enough for an ordinary man for three to four days. So, he is spending Rs.20 extra from his earnings for four days. We should see it that way.” Asvathaman says.

“An ordinary man is not going to fill petrol for large containers as he is not running a factory. I am going to fill petrol in my car or bike. People who belong to Congress party owning luxurious cars such as Audi, BMW and they could feel that they are spending excess money for petrol. We who are using just a car or bike doesn’t get affected with the petrol price hike as we are paying rupees 20 extra for one week or Rs. 100 extra for a month” he added.

“It is a hype you media people do.” he further said and added the current union government is encouraging local farmers to produce oil. He also said that union government is encouraging citizens to buy electric vehicles by increasing petrol cost. watch the video below :
