In her Union Budget 2022 speech, India’s finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced several changes to customs duty, that will, in turn, affect the prices of different commodities. It has been announced that cut and polished diamonds and other gemstones are all set to become cheaper. However, what grabbed the attention of the public is, that the duty on Umbrellas is going to be raised to 20 percentage through which we have to understand that the life saver in summer and rainy season in going to become costlier.

A large number of commonly used items such as headphones, earphones, loudspeaker, smart meters, imitation jewellery, solar cells and solar modules will become more expensive due to a hike in customs duties on imported parts, as proposed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget for 2022-23.

However, imported cut and polished diamonds, frozen mussels, frozen squids, asafoetida, cocoa beans, methyl alcohol and acetic acid will become cheaper as a result of rationalisation in customs duties.

On seeing the customs duty on cut and polished diamonds and gemstones is being reduced to 5 percent and Umbrellas becoming more expensive, online couldn’t resist themselves from reacting to it. “Budget 2022 in short: Indian middle class will die paying taxes” Tamil youtuber Madan Gowri said whereas another Internet user wrote “What does FM have against Umbrellas? Hiked tax including in accessories! Huh?? You think people can get a digital umbrella in the rains? Or not needed due to WFH so businesses may as well wind up? #MonsoonBlues being felt already”
