Nagercoil T. Kasi, also known as Suji, a 26-year-old unemployed youth from Ganesapuram. Kasi’s heinous crimes involved extorting significant sums of money from numerous affluent victims, having deceived and sexually exploited them through social media. The court’s decision sends a strong message against such acts of cybercrime and serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding online interactions.

Operating under the guise of a successful businessman, Kasi cunningly established relationships with several women from affluent families across Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, via social media platforms. Manipulating their trust, he engaged in intimate relationships and subsequently resorted to blackmail using compromising photos and videos. It was not until a courageous woman doctor from Chennai lodged a complaint with the authorities in April 2020 that the true extent of Kasi’s crimes began to unravel.

Upon receiving the complaint, the diligent efforts of the then Superintendent of Police Sreenath led to the initiation of a comprehensive investigation against Kasi. The All Women Police in Kottar promptly arrested Kasi and seized crucial evidence from his residence, including laptops, pen drives, hard disks, cameras, and other electronic equipment. These items revealed a disturbing pattern of sexual assault, indicating that Kasi had preyed upon numerous women, spanning a wide age range, through his interactions on social media.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the police provided a supportive environment for the victims to come forward and report their ordeals, ensuring strict confidentiality. This crucial step encouraged more victims to step forward, leading to a surge in complaints at the District Police Office. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) for a thorough and impartial investigation.

The investigation by the CB-CID unearthed alarming evidence, indicating that Kasi had exploited over 120 women, amassing an extensive collection of over 1,900 nude and semi-nude photos and approximately 400 videos. The sheer magnitude of his crimes serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers posed by online predators, who exploit the vulnerabilities of unsuspecting individuals.

In a decisive move, Fast Track Court Judge Joseph Joy pronounced a life sentence for Kasi, denouncing his reprehensible actions. The court also imposed a substantial fine of ₹1.10 lakh, ensuring that Kasi faces severe consequences for his crimes. This landmark judgment underscores society’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and well-being of its members, particularly women who have historically faced disproportionate vulnerability to such exploitation.

The investigation did not stop at the arrest of Kasi alone. When it was discovered that Kasi’s father, K. Thangapandian, a prominent poultry farm owner with influential connections, had concealed his son’s electronic devices, which served as crucial evidence, he too was apprehended. A separate case was registered against Thangapandian, highlighting the importance of holding individuals complicit in aiding and abetting such criminal activities accountable.
