Mumbai: Woman Assaulted by Man Met Through Online Gaming; Accused Arrested

In a distressing incident that has shaken Mumbai, a 33-year-old woman fell victim to a horrifying betrayal after befriending a 35-year-old man through an online gaming platform. The accused, who met the woman while playing the popular game PUBG at the end of 2020, was later employed at the same event management company as the victim. However, their friendship took a dark turn when he allegedly raped her on the pretext of marriage.

The accused, whose identity has been withheld by the authorities, reportedly established a bond with the woman during their virtual gaming sessions. Gradually, their relationship grew beyond the game, leading to her joining the event management firm where he was already employed. What started as an innocent connection soon turned sinister as the accused manipulated the woman’s trust by promising marriage and a future together.

According to the victim’s statement to the police, the accused took advantage of her emotions and trust, engaging in multiple instances of sexual assault at various hotels between the end of 2020 and January 2023. As if this heinous act was not enough, the accused went a step further by secretly recording videos of the assaults. With these damning recordings in his possession, he resorted to blackmail, threatening to expose her on social media if she refused to continue their physical relationship.

However, the victim’s ordeal did not end there. As time went on, it became evident that the accused had no intention of fulfilling his promises of marriage. Realizing she had been deceived and manipulated, the woman bravely decided to seek justice for the trauma she had endured. Summoning immense courage, she approached the authorities and lodged a formal complaint against her assailant.

In response to the victim’s complaint, the Mumbai police acted swiftly, initiating a thorough investigation into the matter. An FIR (First Information Report) was registered against the accused under sections 376 (Punishment for rape), 376 (n) (2) (physical relations on the promise to marry), and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
