Mumbai: In a surprising turn of events, an elderly couple managed to outwit a jeweler in Nalasopara, Mumbai, making off with silver anklets valued at ₹20,000. The incident, which unfolded on a busy Saturday afternoon, has prompted the police to launch a manhunt for the elusive couple.

The couple, appearing to be in their mid-sixties, executed their scheme with a clever mix of distraction and misdirection. Their approach began innocuously enough, as they entered Chandni Jewellers in Nalasopara East around 1 pm. Seeking to exploit the bustling store, they feigned interest in purchasing jewelry. Their target, Nanalal Jain, the 56-year-old owner of the establishment, was about to become unwittingly embroiled in their plot.

Playing their roles adeptly, the couple expressed their desire to peruse anklet designs for their granddaughter. Jain, ever the accommodating jeweler, produced an assortment of silver anklets from a bag, hoping to cater to their preferences. Unbeknownst to him, the couple was already setting their scheme into motion.

Seizing the opportunity, the elderly woman slyly asked Jain to reveal more designs. As Jain turned to assist other customers, the woman seized a momentary lapse in his attention to snatch a bundle of anklets. Swiftly, she concealed the loot beneath her dress and draped her dupatta over it, effectively obscuring her theft.

Evidently well-practiced, the couple managed to create an impression of normalcy by pretending to choose an anklet for purchase. They cleverly informed Jain that they lacked immediate funds, suggesting they needed to withdraw money from a nearby ATM before finalizing the transaction. To solidify their ruse, they handed Jain ₹500 as an advance payment, ensuring the jeweler’s trust in their intentions.

With the anklet secured in the hidden confines of her clothing, the woman and her accomplice left the store, promising to return promptly with the remaining funds. However, as evening descended, the true nature of their actions came to light. Jain realized that a bundle of silver anklets was conspicuously absent from his collection. A review of the store’s CCTV footage revealed the shocking truth – they had been victims of a well-executed theft.

Faced with the realization that they had been taken advantage of, Jain promptly reported the incident to the local police. A case of theft amounting to ₹20,000 was lodged against the unidentified couple. Law enforcement officials sprang into action, examining the available evidence, primarily derived from the CCTV recordings.

The hunt for the cunning couple remains ongoing. Police officers have diligently studied the CCTV footage, utilizing it to identify the culprits and gather critical information for their eventual arrest. To expedite their capture, the police have shared edited images extracted from the CCTV grabs with their network of informants. These images will aid in recognizing the couple and determining if they have employed similar tactics to swindle other jewelers.

In light of this incident, Gaurav Jain, the son of the store owner, expressed his astonishment at the audacity of the elderly couple’s actions. He emphasized the necessity of installing security cameras within shops to deter such criminal activities. Additionally, he stressed the importance of training sales personnel to showcase merchandise in smaller quantities, thereby minimizing the potential for theft.
