The recent incident of heinous brutality in Manipur, where two women from the Kuki-Jomi community were led naked by a gang of men and sexually assaulted, has sent shockwaves across the country. The incident took place in Bi Bynom village, located in Manipur’s Gangbokbi district. On May 4, a group of men from the Maithei community entered the village following a massive rally by the Kuki tribe on May 3. The rally was organized to protest against the demand for granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Maithei community. In the aftermath of the rally, the village faced a harrowing attack, leaving devastating consequences for the residents, especially the two women involved.

According to the victim’s account, the gang that stormed their village exhibited a murderous intent, and shockingly, members of the police force were also present among the attackers. In a recent interview, the victim recounted, “The gang entered our village with a murderous passion. The police were also present in that gang. They were the ones who caught us from that gang.”

The gravity of the incident is further exacerbated by the fact that the father of one of the women was also targeted and attacked by the assailants. Tragically, her brother was mercilessly beaten to death by the gang. Subsequently, the two women were stripped naked and dragged to a field where they were subjected to sexual assault.

The victims bravely lodged a complaint at the Nongpo Chekmai Police Station in Taupal District on May 18, seeking justice for the horrific crimes perpetrated against them.
