The state of Manipur, known for its rich cultural diversity and picturesque landscapes, has recently been marred by the dark shadows of ethnic clashes. Amidst the ongoing strife between the Meitei and Kuki communities, a shocking incident came to light, exposing the horrors that innocent women faced. A heart-wrenching video circulated on social media, revealing two Kuki women being paraded naked by a mob, which eventually led to one of the women being subjected to a brutal gang-rape. This disturbing incident took place on May 4, 76 days before the video emerged, igniting a wave of anguish and indignation across the nation.

Located in the Kangpokpi district, the village of B Phainom became the epicenter of this horrific tragedy. According to reports, the mob consisted of men identified as members of Meitei Youth Organisations, Meetei Leepun, Kangleipak Kanba Lup, Arambai Tenggol, and World Meitei Council, Schedule Tribe Demand Committee. These “unknown miscreants,” numbering between 800 to 1,000, were allegedly responsible for the gruesome acts perpetrated against the Kuki women.

As per the first information report (FIR) filed in connection with the incident, the mob not only paraded the women naked but also burned down houses in B Phainom village. Additionally, the group intercepted a fleeing group of five people, which included two men and three women. Tragically, one of the men was killed on the spot by the violent mob. The women were then forced to strip, and one of them, in her 20s, fell victim to a brutal gang-rape, while the other two managed to escape.

The brother of the woman being raped displayed immense courage and tried to intervene, only to meet a tragic fate at the hands of the merciless mob. The incident was nothing short of an unthinkable horror that rocked the conscience of the nation.

After the incident, a zero FIR was filed by the Saikul police in Kangpokpi district on May 18. The FIR was then forwarded to the Nongpok Sekmai police station, a common practice when jurisdictional constraints arise. This FIR levied charges of rape and murder against the alleged perpetrators, demanding justice for the heinous crimes committed against the innocent women.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), a collective of tribal groups, vehemently condemned the act and stressed the urgency for the Union and state governments, along with statutory bodies like the National Commission for Women, to take immediate action and bring the culprits to justice. The Working Group for Naga Rights in Manipur also issued a statement, expressing profound shock and condemning the brutality of the Meitei mob.

It is essential to note that the tragic incident occurred amidst the ongoing clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which erupted following a solidarity march held by tribal groups against the demand to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community. The situation in Manipur has been dire, with at least 140 lives lost, numerous injuries, and nearly 50,000 displaced individuals.

Opposition parties have raised their voices, holding the Union government responsible for its perceived inaction and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the escalating conflict. With the monsoon session of parliament underway, the incident is expected to be a focal point of discussion. The opposition parties are urging for the presence of Prime Minister Modi during the discussions, demanding accountability and decisive action to ensure justice for the victims and their families.

In response to the horrifying incident, Prime Minister Modi has expressed deep condemnation, assuring that the culprits will not escape justice. He called upon all chief ministers to strengthen law and order and prioritize the safety and honor of women above political affiliations. The arrest of the main suspect, Heradas, offers a ray of hope that justice will prevail.
