Banks have been warning customers against
sharing details with callers as they do not insist on any information via
cellphone. However,
the recent incident suggests that not all of us take this advice seriously and
hence, end up losing hard-earned money.

On Monday, Umesh Waghela got a call on his
cellphone. The caller identified himself as a State Bank of India (SBI) staff.
Waghela who has a SBI account, was told by the caller that his ATM card would
be blocked and he could apply for a green remit card. When asked Waghela shared
details of his SBI ATM card, including his password.
Interestingly, when the caller asked Waghela if he
had ATM cards of any other bank, he shared details of his IndusInd bank with
the SBI staff. Within minutes two online transactions worth Rs 50,000 was made
using Waghela’s two bank accounts.

Waghela who was at home got the SMS
alerts on his mobile and realised that he has been conned. He managed to block
the two cards. A case has been registered with the Navghar police in Bhayander.

I can’t imagine how reckless he has been
by sharing his card details over the phone, though time again people have been warned
not to do so. I hope he gets his money back, but also hope that this will be a
lesson for being careful from next time!
