Madhya Pradesh: Outrage Erupts as 12-Year-Old Rape Survivor Found Bleeding on the Streets of Ujjain

In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, a 12-year-old girl was discovered bleeding on the streets of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, and subsequent medical examinations confirmed that she had been a victim of rape. The grim discovery unfolded on September 27 when the girl was found wandering in a semi-clothed and visibly distressed state.

The young survivor is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Indore, as the nation grapples with the brutal reality of her ordeal. Perhaps equally distressing is the CCTV footage that has surfaced, depicting the harrowing moments when the girl desperately sought help only to be turned away. The incident has ignited a wave of public anger and condemnation, with opposition parties directing their ire towards the Madhya Pradesh government for what they perceive as a glaring failure to ensure the safety of women in the state.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police, Sachin Sharma, provided grim details of the discovery, stating, “A girl, aged around 12 years, was found bleeding on a street located under the Mahakal police station area in Ujjain on Monday [September 25]. She was taken to a hospital, where her initial medical examination confirmed that she had been raped.” Sharma also noted that based on the girl’s accent, she appeared to be from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, although further investigation would be required to confirm her identity.

CCTV footage from various locations in Ujjain has shed light on the extent of the girl’s distress. The footage shows her wandering the streets for over two hours, desperately seeking assistance. Heartbreakingly, one clip captures her approaching a man who subsequently turns her away, leaving her stranded and vulnerable. It was near Dandi Ashram, a residential gurukul, that the girl finally found help. The manager of the ashram, Rahul Sharma, offered her assistance and promptly alerted the police.

Rahul Sharma recounted the chilling encounter, stating, “I was leaving the gurukul for a meeting when I saw a girl standing close to the Ashram gate. She was bleeding, was half-naked and her eyes were swollen. She seemed scared and tried to move away. I first gave her a cloth [to cover herself] and assured her that she had nothing to fear. I then enquired what had happened but she spoke in a language that I did not understand; I also gave her a pen and paper but she could not write anything either.” Unable to obtain any information about the girl’s parents or contact details, Sharma and the gurukul staff provided her with some food and immediately contacted the police. As of Wednesday evening, the police had not been able to locate the girl’s family.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has announced that one person has been taken into custody, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the matter. However, this has done little to quell the outrage and demands for justice.

The opposition, particularly the Congress party, has intensified its criticism of the ruling BJP government in the state. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi decried the incident as an attack on the “heart of mother India.” State Congress president and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath demanded the harshest punishment for the criminals involved and called for medical treatment and financial assistance amounting to ₹1 crore for the young survivor.

“It is heart-wrenching to see a case of extremely cruel abuse of a small girl in Ujjain,” Mr. Nath lamented. “The kind of rape that happened to a 12-year-old daughter and the way she ran around in many areas of the city in a semi-nude state and then fell unconscious on the road, puts humanity to shame.”

He further questioned the government’s commitment to the safety of women, drawing attention to initiatives like “Ladli Lakshmi” and “Ladli Behna,” both women-centric schemes of the state government, and asking whether the survivor was not also deserving of such protection.

The incident has left a deep scar on both the administration and society, with Mr. Nath likening it to the infamous Nirbhaya case. Randeep Singh Surjewala, the party’s Madhya Pradesh in-charge, also criticized the BJP government as “ineffective” in addressing the rising incidents of sexual violence.

Meanwhile, BJP State president V.D. Sharma expressed his condolences and termed the incident as “most unfortunate.” He assured that the perpetrators would face the harshest punishment, including the possibility of a death sentence.
