Kerala Man who was accused of mastu*bating while groping a woman, was welcomed with garland while getting released from jail. In a disturbing turn of events, members of the All Kerala Men’s Association (AKMA) recently gathered in front of Aluva Sub-Jail in Ernakulam to welcome and celebrate the release of Savad Sha, a 28-year-old man accused of a disturbing act. While it is essential to uphold the principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” the celebration and fervent defense of the accused raise troubling questions about solidarity and victim-blaming.

Savad Sha was sent to remand three weeks ago after a woman alleged that he was masturbating while seated between her and another female passenger on a bus. Disturbingly, AKMA members passionately defended Savad, emphasizing that the charges against him had not been proven. One member even went as far as referring to him as a “victim” of a “heinous plot woven by two women.”

The defense of Savad took a troubling turn when AKMA members regurgitated a victim-blaming narrative propagated by a YouTuber named Jamsheer. Jamsheer alleged that the women involved had planned to “trap men” for social media attention. However, this claim was debunked when the complainant posted a video on Instagram, denying any involvement and providing evidence that she was not even in Kerala on the day of the incident. Despite this, AKMA members remained adamant, casting doubts on the complainant’s credibility and victim-blaming her based on her appearance.
The celebration of Savad’s release and the felicitation by AKMA members at the sub-jail premises, complete with garlands and applause, raises serious concerns. While it is crucial to respect the legal principle of presumption of innocence, it is equally important to consider the impact of celebrating an alleged sex offender. The complainant herself revealed that she received messages from other women who claimed to have experienced similar offenses by Savad. However, rather than acknowledging these allegations, an AKMA member challenged the survivors to publicly reveal their names. This call for survivors to out themselves is a flagrant display of misogyny and insensitivity, perpetuating a society where victim-blaming and character assassination are the immediate responses to women raising allegations of sexual abuse.

Adding another distressing dimension to the situation, AKMA members announced that high-profile advocate BA Aloor had been appointed to defend Savad. Aloor, known for defending the accused in several high-profile cases, will reportedly be funded by the association. While everyone has the right to legal representation, the choice of an advocate notorious for defending individuals convicted of heinous crimes raises concerns about the association’s priorities.

As a society, we must navigate the delicate balance between upholding the presumption of innocence and providing support to survivors who bravely come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. Solidarity should not equate to celebrating an accused individual before due process takes place. Instead, it should involve listening to survivors, ensuring their safety, and supporting them throughout their journey.
The AKMA’s enthusiastic support for Savad Sha, the accused in a troubling case of sexual misconduct, sheds light on the persistence of victim-blaming and the need for a more empathetic and informed response to allegations of abuse. Celebrating an alleged offender while discrediting the complainant and challenging other potential survivors further perpetuates a culture that discourages victims from coming forward. It is high time that we reassess our priorities and stand alongside survivors with compassion and understanding, without compromising the principles of justice and due process.
