Kerala, Pathanamthitta District Collector Dr. Divya S Iyer recently shared a heart-wrenching experience from her childhood at a workshop for mediapersons conducted by the Child Welfare Department. She opened up about being molested by two men when she was just six years old, an experience that left a lasting impact on her mental and emotional well-being.
Iyer recounted how the two men who molested her lovingly sat her next to them, and she couldn’t understand why they were touching her or showing so much affection. She felt uncomfortable when they removed her dress, and she immediately ran away. The trauma from the incident lingered, and whenever she was in a crowd, she would look around to see if those men were present.
Despite the traumatic experience, Iyer attributed her ability to survive and thrive to the support of her parents. She acknowledged that not all children who go through similar experiences have access to the same level of support, which can be devastating for their mental and emotional well-being.
It is commendable that Dr. Iyer chose to share her personal story with the public, as it highlights the importance of addressing the issue of child sexual abuse in our society. Unfortunately, child sexual abuse is a prevalent issue globally, and it is crucial to address it with urgency to ensure the safety and protection of our children.
Dr. Iyer emphasized the importance of educating children about “good touch” and “bad touch” to prevent such incidents from happening in the first place. This is a critical step in the fight against child sexual abuse, and parents, caregivers, and educators must take it seriously. It is also essential to teach children about boundaries and consent, so they understand what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
Additionally, parents and caregivers must be vigilant about who they leave their children with, as child sexual abuse can occur even within a family or trusted circle of friends. It is essential to recognize warning signs, such as a child suddenly becoming withdrawn or exhibiting changes in behavior, and take immediate action.

Dr. Iyer’s experience highlights the need for a support system for victims of sexual abuse. It is crucial to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for survivors to seek help, as the trauma from such incidents can last a lifetime. Mental health professionals must be trained to work with survivors of sexual abuse, and the government must ensure that victims have access to the necessary support and resources.
Furthermore, it is crucial to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. Sexual abuse is a criminal offense, and the justice system must ensure that offenders are brought to justice. However, it is also essential to address the root causes of sexual abuse and work towards creating a culture that respects and values the safety and well-being of all children.
