In a devastating incident at Arasinagundi falls near Shivamogga’s Kollur, a young man was seen washing away while attempting to create an Instagram reel. The entire tragic sequence unfolded on camera, as his friend filmed the ill-fated performance.
On a somber Sunday evening, the young man was spotted standing precariously close to the edge of the river, gearing up for his reel. Eager to capture a thrilling and adventurous moment, he began his performance. However, within mere seconds, tragedy struck, and he slipped into the river, swiftly being carried away by the forceful current.

Local media reports indicated that rescue teams promptly launched a search operation for the missing man, but as of now, he remains unaccounted for. Authorities at the Kollur police station have registered a case, and the distressed family of the young man has arrived at the scene, hoping for a miracle.
This unfortunate incident comes at a time when heavy rains have been incessantly battering North, Central, and Coastal Karnataka. The rising water levels in various reservoirs have prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an Orange alert for the coastal region. As a precautionary measure, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Udupi, Dharwad, and other affected areas.
Tragically, this is not the first instance of a selfie or photo-related accident in the state. Over the past year, there have been multiple reported cases of selfie-related fatalities at tourist destinations across Karnataka. In a particularly heartbreaking incident in November of the previous year, four young girls lost their lives after slipping into a waterfall while attempting to take a selfie near Kitwad falls in Belagavi district. In response to the growing concern over such incidents, the state government has taken measures to prevent further tragedies. Recently, authorities banned taking selfies near the popular Gokak falls in Belagavi district, warning of severe repercussions for offenders.

These unfortunate events serve as a stark reminder of the need for responsible behavior and increased awareness of the potential risks associated with trying to capture daring moments for social media content. While platforms like Instagram offer opportunities for creativity and self-expression, it is crucial to prioritize safety over sensationalism.
Tourist destinations, particularly those involving natural water bodies, can be particularly treacherous during the monsoon season. The allure of capturing picturesque moments for social media can sometimes overshadow the need for caution and adherence to safety guidelines. Authorities and tourism departments must work together to educate visitors about the potential dangers of reckless behavior near waterfalls, rivers, and other hazardous areas. Signage, public service announcements, and awareness campaigns could play a significant role in imparting this crucial information to both locals and tourists alike.
Additionally, friends and companions witnessing such activities must be vigilant and cautious in discouraging or preventing risky behavior. Instead of encouraging dangerous stunts for the sake of capturing “viral” content, they should prioritize the safety and well-being of their loved ones. In light of the recent tragedy, it is hoped that communities and families will engage in open discussions about responsible social media usage and safety. Ensuring that young individuals comprehend the real-life consequences of their actions can lead to a more cautious and responsible online culture.

the tragic event at Arasinagundi falls serves as a wake-up call to society, urging us to reflect on the consequences of our actions and the priorities we set in the digital age.
