“Kadaikutty Singam” fame Actress Jeevita Bagheer, a popular serial actress known for her role in the office serial aired on Vijay TV, has recently spoken up about an unsettling experience she had early on in her career in the film industry. In an interview, Jeevita recounted how a director had offered her a role as a heroine in a movie, but with a catch. He asked her to make certain adjustments in exchange for a higher salary and more film opportunities.
Jeevita revealed that at the time, she was new to the cinema industry and did not know anyone. When the opportunity to act as a heroine in a film came her way, she jumped at the chance. However, she soon realized that the offer was not as straightforward as she had initially thought. The director told her that in order to secure the role, she would have to make some adjustments, namely, by being accommodating to the cameraman, producer, and manager. These adjustments would take place over a period of 15 days in Thanjavur.
Jeevita was taken aback by the director’s proposal. She asked what kind of adjustments he was referring to, and he replied that they would need to come to her room anytime. Jeevita knew exactly what he meant, and the shock of it all made her want to cry. She left the office without saying anything, feeling humiliated and violated.
Jeevita’s story is unfortunately not an isolated incident. Many actresses have spoken out about the prevalence of the “adjustment” culture in the film industry, where aspiring actresses are pressured into compromising their dignity and self-respect in exchange for roles and opportunities. This kind of culture is especially pervasive in a male-dominated industry like Indian cinema, where actresses are often seen as mere objects of desire rather than as talented performers.
Actress Varalakshmi and others have also recently spoken out about the adjustment culture in the film industry. In an interview, Varalakshmi highlighted the fact that even the daughters of famous actors are not immune to this kind of exploitation. She questioned what the status of ordinary women trying to make it in the industry must be like, given that even those with connections and privilege are not exempt from this kind of treatment.
Jeevita’s story serves as a reminder of the urgent need for change in the Indian film industry. It is time for those in power to take a stand against the toxic and exploitative culture that has plagued the industry for far too long. Actresses should not have to choose between their dignity and their careers. It is high time for the industry to start valuing actresses for their talent and hard work, rather than reducing them to mere objects of desire.
