On Friday, popular Badminyon player Jwala Gutta expressed her dejection over people dropping racist comments to a tweet she posted about her grand mother’s death. Many of the social media users attacked her with reply tweets asking why she mentioned Coronavirus as “COVID” and not “Chinese virus”. Born to a Chinese mother, Jwala Gutta has faced racism in the past and this time, after receiving “racist” comments on her grand mother’s death, Jwala said that she was appalled. Several online users, including actor Vishnu Vishal, tweeted in support of Gutta and suggested her to Ignore.

For this tweet, Jwala received “Racist” replies from the users of the micro blogging social media platform. Reacting to such comments, Jwala said “I am mourning the loss of my grand mom who passed away in China and to my surprise I get racist replies….and I am asked why I say covid and not Chinese virus….What has happened to us as a society…where’s the empathy…where r we headed…and there r defenders?? Shameful!”

Actor Vishnu Vishal who is known among tamil audience for acting in films such as “Jeeva”, “Indru Netru Naalai”, “Raatchasan”, stretched his supportive hand to Jwala by suggesting her to ignore such comments. “There is so much evil in the society… No one can change it unless the change comes from within.. Ignore..” the actor’s reply to Jwala’s tweet read.

Many other users supported the 14 time national champion. Jwala Gutta has been facing racist comment since the emergence of COVID 19 outbreak. However, she chose to ignore them and to move on in her life. “I actually pity them. These people who are trolling me are the ones who will come asking for a selfie. So I really don’t pay too much attention to them,” Jwala said in one of her tweets about the people who spew hatred at her.
