On Wednesday, health minister Ma. Subramaniam announced that there will be full lockdown on Sundays to reduce the hike of Omicron cases in state Tamil nadu. The government has also announced night curfew from Thursday which will restrict people to roam in the streets from 10 am to 5 pm. It has been reported that people will not be allowed at places of worship on Friday, Saturday and Sundays.

There will be no public transport available on 9th of January and no metros will be in service. No restaurants, malls and shops will be allowed to function during Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Restaurant takeaways will be allowed between 7 am and 10 pm. No food delivery will be allowed this time, said the new rules.

A maximum number of 100 people are allowed to attend weddings and 50 people for funerals. The government announcement said that manufacturing factories and IT companies are allowed to function, while work from home is encouraged. The government also said that all the colleges, except medical colleges should be shut.

The country has reported 58,097 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, 55 per cent higher than yesterday’s 37,379 cases. This is twice the number seen only four days ago, sending alarm bells ringing across the states. Lockdowns are not the solution for Covid. Lockdown is done to only to avoid the health care system to get collapsed. Lockdowns can be easily avoided if we wear mask, avoiding unnecessary gathering and vaccinate if not done to avoid severe covid and continue to live normal.
