“Aayirathil Oruvan” is a 2010 released film starring Karthi, Reemasen, Andrea. Parthiban and others. The film revolved around three characters, Muthu (Karthi), Lavanya (Andrea Jeremiah) and Anitha (Reemma Sen) who embark on an adventure to search for a missing archaeologist. It is inspired loosely by the historical decline of the Tamil Chola dynasty and the rise of the Tamil Pandya dynasty.
Despite being a average hit at the box office, the film is currently being considered as a cult classic. Now, in a recent interaction with a youtube channel, Director Selvaraghavan, for the first time, revealed that he spent almost half of the money in the budget of “Aayirathil Oruvan”.
“Producer of “Aayirathil Oruvan” invested only 60 % of the budget. His job ended there and I asked him not to spend more too. I spent rest of the money and it took 15 years for me to pay off all the debts of “Aayirathil Oruvan”. Producer recovered the money during the release time but the money I invested didn’t come back” the filmmaker said.
“Members at the Producers council and every others know about this truth. I promised an amount to the producer and the budget reached that amount. Asking him more money is not right and I risked myself for the rest of the money. I was paying the debts till three years before. Not many know about this truth” he further added.
The filmmaker said that the film was made on a budget of Rs. 30 crore and he invested R. 12 crore in it. “Rs. 30 crore was a huge amount at that time and it will declared as a profit only if it collects more than Rs. 50 crore. The film didn’t collect that much” he concluded.
