Actor-politician Kamal Haasan Thursday said the amount sought by the Tamil Nadu government as central assistance towards rehabilitation activities in Cyclone Gaja-hit districts seems to be an “arbitrary figure.”

Actor turned politician Kamal Hassan has hit out at politicians who have said that Cyclone Gaja did not lead to devastation.

Kamal Hassan tweeted, Even after seeing the devastation in the cyclone Gaja affected region, politicians who say that the impact is not much should be seen as a national disaster.

Makkal Needhi Maiam President Kamal Haasan visited cyclone-affected areas in Pudukottai and the Cauvery delta districts on Friday, extending solidarity with the affected people and farmers.

On his second leg of the tour of the cyclone hit districts, Mr. Haasan started off from Tiruchi and made his first stop at Gandharvakottai before moving on to Akkachipatti in Pudukottai district to interact with the people. He visited a relief camp at a government school at Bandhuvakottai and inspected the conditions there.

Interacting with the affected people, he urged them to ensure that the children did not miss out on attending school even though the families were going through a difficult time.

On finding workers engaged in restoring power lines at various places en route, Mr. Haasan got down to congratulate them for a “brilliant job” but also urged them to be careful.

He also interacted with coconut growers at Pattukottai and other places where the cyclone had caused extensive damages. He listened to the farmers stories of woes. Many farmers told him that they had switched over to coconut for want of water for irrigation and now the crop too has been destroyed, raising a question over their livelihood.

H.Raja, one of the leading politician and spokesperson of BJP criticized a picture of Kamal Haasan which was taken during his visit to the Delta districts. The picture shows Kamal keeping his one leg on a fallen coconut tree by looking right in front of him.

On seeing this picture H.Raja wrote “He did not went there to console the people who were affected by Gaja cyclone, but for cinema shooting. Shame” in his official twitter account.
