A class X maths teacher was beaten up in front of students by relatives of a girl student alleging he had sexually harassed her, police said. The teacher suffered head injuries and was hospitalized.

R Kannan was accused of sexual harassment by a class X student of the high school. The victim complained about Kannan when her parents prodded why she did not attend the school for five days.

Following this, the locals and relatives of the victim gathered at the school and demanded action against the teacher. The relatives of the girl student stormed into the class and started assaulting the teacher even as shocked students screamed for help. The mob left the place when other teachers rushed in to rescue their colleague.  The video of the attack has gone viral on the social media.

The video shows Kannan being attacked by a group of ten men who were wearing lungis and jerseys in the presence of students inside a classroom.  He is also seen bleeding profusely from his head.

As the crowd left after intervention of school authorities, a distraught Kannan sat at the last bench of the classroom with his head hanging down. He has since been admitted to the Chengam government hospital for medical assistance.

The relatives of the victim have also lodged a complaint against the teacher with the headmaster of the school. The district education officer has ordered for a probe into the matter.

The incident at the government school near Chengam on Monday was caught on camera and was telecast by TV channels.
