The government of Madhya pradesh has announced monetary gifts for people who marry disabled people. This initiative by the government is to erase the taboo of marrying a disabled person.
The state government says it’s the only scheme of its kind in the country. “The plan has been finalized and sent to the finance department. It will be cleared in the cabinet and come into effect soon,” said social justice and disabled persons welfare minister Gopal Bhargava.
Unlike the widow remarriage scheme, where the government expects 1,000 beneficiaries in the first year, it has no idea how many people would avail of the disabled wedding gift.
Like the widow remarriage scheme, this, too, comes with non-negotiable conditions to ensure that no one marries just to get the money. Third, the disabled person must not be above 45 years. Also the person should not be married before.
Officials said the plan has been cleared at the minister level. “We could have arranged for the funds on our own but to avoid any hiccups, the proposal has been sent to the finance department for clearance,” said an official. Unlike the widow remarriage scheme, where the government expects 1,000 beneficiaries in the first year, it has no idea how many people would avail of the disabled wedding gift. “We will figure out as it goes and ensure that the highest number of people benefit,” said the minister.
