Rasathi, 52, had gone to work as usual on her 1.5-acre field at Mudikandam on the outskirts of Tiruchi on Tuesday morning, when a neighbour came running with the news of her daughter Gomathi Marimuthu winning a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championship in Doha.

Though she wasn’t able to fully comprehend the magnitude of her daughter’s achievement, the mother’s joy knew no bounds as she rushed back home to share the happiness with the villagers. The entire village is gushing with pride after Gomathi’s gold-medal winning performance in the 800 meter event.

The 30-year-old Gomathi clocked a personal best time of 2 minute 02.70 seconds in the half mile event to win a surprise gold for India. “I did not realise till I crossed the finish line that I have won a gold medal. The last 150m was very tight race,” Gomathi said later after winning the Gold.

Now to our shock, Gomathi Marimuthu has said that the shoes she was wore during the competition was a torn pair. In her interview to News 18 Tamilnadu , she thanked her father with her whole heart. She also reported that her village doesn’t have proper road facilities. She further added that her village doesn’t have proper light facility or bus facility. “The politicians themselves would know that it is hard to travel in those roads” she said.

While talking about the support provided by the government, Gomathi said she did not gained support as good as the co-athletes from other countries. “Even the shoes I wore during the competition were torn. Those players who ran with me know about it. Even the clothes I wore was not as grand as their clothes but I am not worried about it. Even the money I spent for the flight, hotel rooms were my own money.” She said in her interview.
