Filmmaker cum actor and voice over artist Gautham Vasudev Menon answered to a question on why he chose to work with Karthik in “Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru”. Sudhir Srinivasan who interviewed the filmmaker, asked the question as a representative of social media users. Gautham is being called out for giving opportunity to the singer cum musician who got accused during the MeToo movement that led by singer Chinmayi in South India. The duo worked together in the recently released short “Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru” which was made for “Navarasa” an anthology film.

Ever since the songs from the short got released in Internet, people in social media, especially those who use Twitter, has been calling out the filmmaker. Chinmayi named Karthik in one of her social media posts and accused him of harassing girls. When a user questioned about his role in the “Me Too” controversy, Chinmayi replied saying “He was named by multiple women. He has a close competition with Mr Vairamuthu. :)”

Now, after the release of “Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru”, several users of Twitter could be seen making memes, trolls and posts to criticize Gautham for choosing Karthik for his project. When the announcement of Karthik and GVM collaborating took place, Chinmayi uploaded a series of tweets questioning the same.

Yes, he was. Multiple singers. Other women who have nothing to do with the industry too. Actually many are silently working with Mr Vairamuthu. Expecting any better from the film industry is a lost cause.

Platforming molesters is everyone’s problem. Karthik has as much support as does Vairamuthu. If I remember right, Mr Srinivas sent messages to people on social media that they must ‘think why the fraternity wont support me for my cause’. So yeah – bro code.

Sudhir Srinivasan questioned about the same to the filmmaker in his recent interaction with hoim which about “Guitar Kambi Mele Ninru. Answering to him, GVM said that he received a couple of messages from people questioning himself working with Karthik. “I am with them. I completely agree. I am not saying I am being called an enabler in this process actually. Couple of messages have come to me which I feel is not true at all” the filmmaker started answering.

“If I go ahead to say that I have made my peace with what happened with him, I have to give a lot of explanation about it but we did that. We had extensive discussions with the family” GVM said and expressed his dislike over the interview being highlighted with the same topic. He went on to add “There is a family and on the other hand there are some people who will say that there are other women who are affected and I think it is not true. There is a family that is largely affected here”

“I am very conscious about me talking about it should not affect the lives of few people. At that point when this came out, we spoke extensively. They reached out, they connected with a few people and things were sorted out. Whatever else is coming out is residue of that” the filmmaker said in the interview. “For 45-50 days, we sat, we didn’t do any work. We discussed it. We spoke to people. We made him speak to people. His family got in and there were lot of discussions that went on” he added.

“Only after making my peace with that issue, we started working together again. I can meet a lot of people and figure out what their angst is but twitter is not a medium for that, I feel.” the filmmaker said and added that Netflix also went through the same process by bringing the lawyers in before committing Karthick in “Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru”. Gautham also revealed that Karthik didn’t get remuneration for working in the project.
