In a tragic incident, a 17-year-old girl, upset over failing the NEET exams, committed suicide by consuming rat poison at Ginjee in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu late on Monday night.

Police said, the young medical aspirant, Prathiba, who had scored an impressive 1125 marks out of 1200 in the Plus-two board exams, was upset after the NEET results were out.

A dejected Prathiba consumed rat poison and collapsed. She was rushed to Tiruvannamalai Government Hospital, where she was declared dead.

The post-mortem would be conducted on Tuesday after which her body would be handed over to the parents. She hailed from a poor family. While her father was a coolie, her mother was a farm worker.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters at the airport, actor Rajinikanth, who had confirmed his political entry, condoled the death of Prathiba and called for efforts to prevent such incidents.

”Really it is a sad thing to hear. I express my condolence to the family of that girl”, he said, adding, ”such things should be stopped”.

Her suicide created a furore in the state, with leaders of all political parties forcing the state government to adopt a resolution in the State Assembly seeking to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET as it put the rural students in a disadvantageous position.

Meanwhile musician come actor G.V Prakash who raised his voice occasionally for social issues stated his view on Prathiba’s death and blamed NEET examination by accusing the Educational system. He said that NEET Victims Anitha and Prathiba are made to attend the Exam without a proper guidance which lead to kill themselves. He also used the Hashtag #NeetKillsPratheeba
