Suriya’s “Soorarai Pottru” released in Amazon Prime in a festive season only to make the fans of Tamil cinema go gaga over it. It became the first Tamil film to have a background of flight, airport and airlines as its core plot. On seeing a top-tier actor’s film getting released after a very long time due to COVID 19 outbreak, fans of Internet became extremely happy and watched the film overnight. The film became a commercial success and being lauded by critics as well.
The film which is inspired from the life history of Air Deccan founder G.R Gopinath, is touted to be a coming of age biographical drama. It is notable that Gopinath is a retired Captain of the Indian Army, an author, and also a politician. Directed by Sudha Kongara who stunned audience with her “Irudhi Chuttru”, the film “Soorarai Pottru” is bankrolled by Suriya himself under his own banner 2D entertainments. Due to the corona outbreak, Suriya decided to release the movie directly on Amazon Prime.
The film’s plot revolves around Nedumaaran Rajangam’s constant struggles to initiate an Airline of his own to make simple people travel in it. Director Sudha Kongara, in an interview said that she took inspiration from G.R Gopinath’s autobiography “Simple fly” and made a story that is suitable for the entertainment medium.
The relationship between Maara and Bommi(played by Aparna Balamurali) is something we can’t see in Tamil cinema often. Though their chemistry isn’t the greatest, it worked with regards to the writing of Sudha Kongara. The way Sudha parallelly showed how Bommi achieved her dream of running a successful bakery was loved by the fans.

As we all know, the film showed Suriya as a rebel who fights against the caste barriers. Several scenes in the film such as getting married to Bommi by wearing black shirt and Periyar poster in the background, expressing his anger on how caste discriminates people, the film stood tall against the caste system. Now, on seeing the term “Iyengar” in the post shared by Gopinath, many people reacted to it.
