Desai’s journey in the world of art direction began with humble roots. He studied photography at the prestigious JJ School of Arts and started his career as the fourth assistant director on the TV show “Tamas.” However, it was in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 1994 film, “1942: A Love Story,” where his talent was first recognized. From there, he went on to work extensively with directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani, and Ashutosh Gowariker, creating magnificent sets for films like “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” “Bajirao Mastani,” “Jodha Akbar” “Lage Raho Munna Bhai,” and “Panipat.”

Unfortunately, behind the success and accolades, Desai was grappling with financial difficulties. His company, ND’s Art World Pvt Ltd, had defaulted on a massive Rs 252-crore loan from its financial creditor. A bankruptcy court had admitted an insolvency petition against his company, and the mounting debts seemed to have taken a toll on him. Despite the challenges, his friends, including BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde, tried to counsel and encourage him, citing examples of others who bounced back from adversity. However, the burden seemed to be overwhelming.
