Severe cyclonic storm “Gaja” crossed between the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranniyam early Friday, with wind speed gusting up to 120 km per hour, a weather bulletin said.

According to Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority, as many as 76,290 people were evacuated from low lying areas and sheltered at over 300 relief centres in six districts including Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram and Tiruvarur. Due to Cyclone Gaja, a holiday has been declared for educational institutions in Nagapattinam.

Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Thiruvarur districts are receiving rainfall. The weather office predicted rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy at a few places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Meanwhile a recent video of a Tamilnadu bus conductor taking efforts to make his passengers reach their destination safe surfaced on Internet. Shabbir Ahmed,a  journalist uploaded the video in which the bus conductor seems to be in his early 30’s introducing himself as Bala Bairavan.

In the video he is seen holding the electric wires with a long broken branch of a tree in order to make way for the bus. When Shabbir asked about his whereabouts, Bala said that his origin is Voimedu, a village in Vedaranyam taluk, Nagapattinam district. The bus comes all the way from Chennai he added.

While most of us making excuses and pointing fingers at storms and rains to bunk our daily work, this youth made efforts and helped his passengers to reach their destination safely.
