Renowned filmmaker Pandiraj who made “Etharkkum Thuninthavan” with Suriya, in his recent interaction with director cum film celebrity Chithra Lakshmanan, opened about the film’s performance at the box office. He said that the film didn’t do well as expected and expressed his admiration over the success of Dhanush’s recent feel good movie “Thiruchitrambalam”.

“Etharkkum Thuninthavan” which had Suriya and Priyanka Mohan in the lead roles, was bankrolled by Sun pictures. The film released in theatres on 10th of March 2022 with much expectations among fans. The dubbed versions of it released in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages simultaneously. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics with praise for the cinematography, action sequences and the social message conveyed in the film.

Plot of the film revolves around Kannapiran played by Suriya who is a lawyer by profession. He who belongs to a rural part of Tamil nadu, gets married to the love of his life Aathini. Villain Vinay runs a heinous gang that lures women in the pretext of love and earns money by selling them to influential business men. He also threatens the girls and earns money.

The protagonist who comes to know about the harm the gang causes to women, removes his lawyer coat and wears Vetti that is seeking justice to the criminals in an illegal way. The film is said to be made by having the Pollachi issue that grabbed the entire country’s attention as an inspiration.

In his recent interaction with senior filmmaker Chithra Lakshmanan, director Pandiraj opened about the box office performance of the film. “Etharkkum Thuninthavan didn’t collect big. I must say it. It did decently, Producer was happy and they also asked us to do another film with the same combination but it didn’t become the best of Suriya sir as far as as collection is concerned” Pandiraj said.

“Thinking of what went wrong, I decided to go to a different world. At that time, a set of people say that I should be doing what’s easy for me. They say that family drama is my home ground and question me for choosing other genres” the filmmaker said.

“On the other hand, my assistants will tell me not to go with family drama. It confuses me. There are lots of contents are there to watch these. While I was thinking that emotions won’t work, a film like “Thiruchitrambalam” collects huge. So we should keep learning, there is no template” the filmmaker said.
