In a significant breakthrough, the cybercrime wing of the Greater Chennai police apprehended a 22-year-old engineering graduate from Erode for his alleged involvement in filming women without their consent and selling their morphed images on the messaging service Telegram. The arrest came after a complaint was filed by a woman from Adambakkam, who claimed that she had fallen victim to this individual’s reprehensible actions.

How to deal with cybercrime in India?

According to the victim’s statement, she had visited a mall in 2022 to shop for the upcoming Diwali festival. Unbeknownst to her, while she was trying on an outfit in a trial room, she was secretly filmed by an unknown individual. Subsequently, she discovered that her morphed images were being circulated and sold on the platform Telegram. Disturbed by the violation of her privacy, she promptly reported the incident to the police.

Leveraging CCTV footage and other crucial evidence, the police were able to identify and apprehend the suspect, Arya, on July 13. It was discovered that the accused would subsequently manipulate these images, transforming them into obscene content. He would then upload the morphed images as password-protected zip files on the messaging service Telegram. Interested users would be required to pay a fixed amount to obtain the password for accessing these illicit files. The police revealed that during the raid on Arya’s residence, they seized several items of evidence, including a cellphone, laptop, details of bank transactions, and a 2 TB hard disk containing a vast collection of images featuring women.
