A tweet uploaded by Anand Narasimhan who is currently working as an anchor at Network 18 has created a debate among the users of the micro blogging social media site. Through his tweet, he questioned whether the reservation system is still needed in India based on caste. He said that it’s time to consider providing the benefits of reservation to the economically weaker section.

Reservation is primarily given to all 3 groups which includes Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes abbreviated as SC, ST, OBC respectively. Originally reservation was only given to SCs and STs but was later extended to OBCs. As we all know, Reservation allows the Indian government to set reserved quotas or seats, which lower the qualifications needed in exams, job openings etc. for socially and economically backward citizens.

“Does India still need Caste based reservation? Why not move to blanket 50% reservation for EWS… with eligibility for all those who file their returns and anyone less than 8L p.a income but with no compromise on merit. Have Provisions/safeguards in place to prevent Creamy layer.” Anand Narasimhan said in his tweet which created a huge debate with people supporting and opposing his stand.

Chandra Kumar Bose whose twitter bio says that he is a rights activist, said “Reservation must be based on economic reasons & not caste.” in his reply whereas many extended their voice saying “RESERVATION IS NOT A POVERTY ALLEVIATION SCHEME.”

“Reservations are not an employment guarantee scheme, it’s a way to achieve social justice. It’s about social justice for those who have been marginalised and oppressed for thousands of years and over generations.” one of them said to express his opinion.
Check out some of the reactions below :
Reservation is not a poverty alleviation programme my friend. It is an attempt to address thousands of years of caste based discrimanation. Poverty alleviation can help you afford a horse. Reservation is needed to empower you to ride that on your wedding through a UC village https://t.co/RdSDdDddE4

It was only after 4000 years of this religion, and too out of a fear of conversions that backward caste folks were allowed in religious shrines and schools in the 1930-1950s. That too amid protests.
RESERVATION IS NOT A POVERTY ALLEVIATION SCHEME.

Your ancestors and mine benefitted from privileged caste quotas for centuries. Reservation is only a small way to address this huge injustice. Even 100 more years might not be enough It's not poverty alleviation. Read please. https://t.co/hesDw5b6Sb
